Just nu visas en serie bilder på temat faderskap i montern för konst på papper på våning 5. Den här presentationen rör sig bort från museets vanliga, sakliga röst. I stället närmar den sig faderskapet genom personliga reflektioner, fragment och poetiska läsningar av verk ur samlingen. Här får det subjektiva ta plats – minnet, sorgen, förväntan – i dialog med bilderna. För att bevara denna ton presenteras texterna i detta sammanhang enbart på engelska.
What kind of father am I expected to be? As I will soon become one after recently losing my own, this question has been on my mind. I have been searching in the collection of the museum in which I work for an answer, for the father figure. Looking through the tropes and archetypes, the characters from myth and legend, through the classics, the old masters, through the books I read as a child. What can they tell me about this position I’m in, of the father lost too young and the one I am yet to become?
This search has become The Fatherhood Elegies. Fragments, initial reflections, recollections and poems brought on by a unique year marked by loss and elation in equal measure. These displays shows excerpts from these texts alongside depictions of fathers from the collection. Together, they are a glimpse at fatherhood through the centuries, how it has changed and why my experience as a son and my experience as a father may not be so unique after all.
