The US artist Bruce Nauman (b. 1941) showed both classic works and his most recent installation in a major exhibition at the Gothenburg Museum of Art. Nauman’s works are often based on the artistic act and its boundaries in regard to human rationality and consciousness. Not infrequently, there is a streak of irony and dark humour. Questions about meaning, language, perception, violence and human freedom are recurring themes in the oeuvre of this artist, which has been immensely important during the past half-century.
The exhibition comprised around 20 works from the late 1960s and onwards. Several of Nauman’s most important works – such as the video installation Anthro/Socio from 1992 and the neon sculpture Life and Death from 1983 – were shown for the first time in Sweden. The exhibition catalogue includes articles by the writer, dramatist and Professor of the History of Ideas Michael Azar, and the art critic Kim West.
