The art of Charlotte Gyllenhammar (b. 1963) moves us with compelling force. Her work has a vibrating tension that seems almost apocalyptic, but also raises questions about the interrelatedness of events, history, power and memory, and opens up possibilities to analyze and draw conclusions. With several major public works, Gyllenhammar established herself as one of Sweden’s most influential sculptors, but she also works in techniques such as photography, film, and spatial installations.
The richly illustrated catalogue with three essays presents Charlotte Gyllenhammar’s oeuvre from different starting points and perspectives. In an introductory interview, the exhibition’s curator Anna Hyltze captures the artist’s thoughts about the artistic process and her development from painting to other modes of expression such as photography, film and spatial installations.
Johannes Nordholm, Psychologist and Art educator, approaches Gyllenhammar’s art from psychological and philosophical perspectives and sketches some of the major contours in the artist’s production. Annika Wik, a researcher in the history and theory of film with a focus on film and contemporary art, treats the cinematic aspects of Charlotte Gyllenhammar’s art in relation to other contemporary film-makers.
