Replicants in acid rain, tattooed animals in snowstorms and eerie observatories that have been erased forth out of a cosmic darkness. Hannaleena Heiska (b. 1973) is one of the most acclaimed Finnish artists in the younger generation. Heiska’s imagery contains traces of graffiti, music, science fiction and fantasy films, as well as moods from lyrical fin de siècle nature painting. She often investigates the boundary between humanity, nature and dreams. The exhibition was her first larger solo exhibition in Sweden and her first major museum exhibition.
The catalogue presents the three series of paintings that comprised the exhibition: Observatories (2014–2015), Blade Runner (2012–2013) and paintings from 2007–2011. It contains a newly written text by Hannaleena Heiska and Mika Hannula, a Berlin-based writer, art critic and researcher.
The project was financed by Fram Visual Art Finland, the Culture Fund for Sweden and Finland, the Arts Promotion Centre Finland, and the Längmanska Culture Fund.
